While Nigerians and well wishers are still basking in the euphoria of Akinwunmi Adesina’s re-election as AfDB President, another Nigerian in diaspora has earned a historic appointment.
Yes, Nigerian born, Kelechi “Kaycee” Madu has become the first black Justice Minister and Solicitor General in Alberta, Canada.
Jason Kenney, the Premier of Alberta said Madu’s appointment would bring the needed perspective and change in the justice system.
Madu speaking on his appointment said the importance of carrying the new ministry forward amid difficult social and economic times weighs heavily on his mind.
He explained that his fundamental belief in equal access to justice has always informed his legal work and that will never change.
So, here are facts you need to know about the first black Justice Minister and Solicitor General in Canada; Kaycee Madu!
He is a graduate of Law from University of Lagos and was called to bar in the early 2000s.
Madu has been practicing for 16 years, both in Nigeria and Canada. He also runs Tisel Nigeria Law Office, a law firm with his wife, Emem.
He has work for legal Aid Alberta and Volunteered with the Edmonton Community Legal Centre and the Lawyer Referral Program of the Law Society of Alberta.
Before his appointment, Madu was a member of the Legislative assembly of the province representing the district of Edmonton South West after winning the 2019 Alberta general election.
In 2009, alongside a team he worked within the public service and was awarded the Premier’s Award of Excellence in the bronze medal category.
He volunteers with Alberta’s Nigeria and Igbo communities.
