The Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, Nigeria’s Amina Mohammed, has spoken against the policies of the Taliban Government which limits the freedom of women and girls in Afghanistan.
Ms Mohammed called for the need to ensure that all Afghan girls get educated without any form of condition.
The UN Deputy Secretary-General said this during a panel discussion on the future for girls’ education in the Middle Eastern country, which was recently overtaken by the Taliban who are popular for their de facto authority.

The panel discussion was on the sideline of the ongoing United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), in New York, the United States.
WHAT THIS MEANS:
- The United Nations is strongly rooting for women and girls in Afghanistan even in the face of dictatorship.
- Prominent women across the world are getting involved in the movement to ensure that the right of women and the girl-child is protected in the country.
- The international community has been urged to get involved in order to ensure that the education of the girl-child does, which has been on for two decades, does not die a premature death.
- Ms Mohammed also reminded Afghan women that the UN is still on the ground, delivering for the people on all fronts.
The Taliban seized power in August and recently confirmed that while secondary schools were reopening, only boys would be returning to the classroom. Women teachers in the country are also unable to return to work.
According to reports from the country, the administration’s spokesperson said a “safe learning environment” would need to be established before girls could go back to high school.
