December 1, 2021, has been set by the Federal Government for civil servants across the country to begin to show their proof of COVID-19 vaccination.

The Presidential Steering Committee (PSC), which is leading the charge in combating the spread of COVID-19 in Nigeria, said that civil servants will present proof of vaccination or negative Polymerase Chain Reaction tests conducted within 72 hours before they can gain access to their offices.

Boss Mustapha, who serves as the chairman of the PSC, while speaking during a press briefing in Abuja, said that an appropriate service-wide advisory/circular would be issued to guide the process.

Mustapha, who is also the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, while advising Nigerians to increase vigilance during the festive period, said:

“The PSC wishes to put Nigerians on notice that two major religious festivities (Sallah and Christmas) are approaching, and we shall be experiencing increased passenger traffic in and out of the country.

“Similarly, events of large gatherings are likely to hold. While the PSC prepares to escalate surveillance and other control activities, we urge States and all Nigerians to also increase their vigilance and take measures to moderate activities.”

WHAT THIS MEANS:

  • Civil servants who fail to vaccinate on or before the due date would be barred from gaining access to their workspaces.
  • Nigerians should be on guard during upcoming festivities in order to prevent a surge of the virus.
  • A service-wide circular will be issued by the Federal Government to guide the affected persons through the process.
  • Statistics generated over the last four weeks on testing showed that the trend of infection is going down in some states while the trajectory is upward in others.

Meanwhile, Mustapha noted that the UK has eased restrictions on fully vaccinated travellers from Nigeria to the UK from October 11.

He added:

“Nigeria welcomes this development and assures that the PSC shall continue to review Nigeria’s protocols based on global developments, science, and national experience. A revised protocol will be issued in the next 24 hours.”
