As the naira continues to tumble and fumble against the dollars, aggrieved Nigerians have called for the resignation of the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele.
Defending the CBN governor and faulting calls for his resignation, the spokesman of the apex bank, Mr Osita Nwanisobi, stated that the demand for Emefiele’s resignation is championed by people with selfish agenda.
According to Nwanisobi, the agitation for the removal of the CBN governor is further sponsored by those who have long benefitted from illegal practices in the forex market.
What This Means
- The CBN is firmly rooting for Emefiele’s continued stay in office despite Naira’s free fall against the dollars.
- The bank urges the public to disregard such calls for the removal of the governor, saying such moves are aimed at disrupting the reputation of the CBN.

- Despite the current development, Nwasinaobi said the CBN remains committed to meeting the foreign exchange request of travelers with legitimate needs such as travel allowances, payment of tuition and medical fees among others.
The call for Emefiele’s removal is coming on the heels of the face-off between the CBN and AbokiFX, a forex information platform.
AbokiFX had been accused of trading forex, manipulating the parallel market, and causing a further depreciation of the naira.
The company, in a statement issued to clear the air on the situation, denied the allegations and suspended the use of its platform for accessing forex information.
In the meantime, there were expectations that the naira would appreciate following AbokiFX’s suspension of its activities. Four days on, the naira’s depreciation is still in full gear.
