The Lagos State Government has finally spoken up after the ill-fated building collapse on Gerrard Road, Ikoyi, that has so far claimed at least five lives, while several others are still trapped in the rubble.

Stating its position on the development, the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) revealed that the collapsed building under construction, skipped building standards as the owner was given the approval to construct only 15 floors but constructed 21.

Mr. Gbolahan Oki, the General Manager, Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) revealed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

Mr. Oki also stated that the owner of the property has been arrested and would face the wrath of the law, just as he confirmed the figured of those that have died from the incident and those who sustained various degrees of injuries.

Mr Oki said:

“He (owner of the structure) got an approval for a 15-storey building and he exceeded his limit. I am on ground here and the materials he used are so inferior and terrible.

“The materials he used, the reinforcement, are so terrible. He got approval for 15 floors but built 21.

“I think he has been locked down. He has been arrested before now.”

 “We are still here and have four machines working as at this moment.

The statement of the LASBCA boss is coming less than 24 hours after Talestime9ja called out the Lagos State Government over the incessant collapse of structures in the state and the latest one on Gerrard Road, Ikoyi, on Monday, November 1, 2021.

The spokesperson for the Lagos State Emergency Management Authority (LASEMA), Nosa Okunbo, who confirmed the collapse, said the high-rise building collapsed by Musliu Junction, Ikoyi, pointing out that LASEMA was on top of the situation.
