The Nigerian Government has announced plans to go after persons who have looted the country’s assets.
The Muhammadu Buhari-led government says 200 million Pounds of the country’s assets are stashed in the United States by corrupt individuals.
Nigeria’s Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and the Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, made this disclosure when he spoke on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, United States.
Malami, in his statement, highlighted the government’s anti-coruption efforts, which he says are aimed at ensuring that the war against corruption in Nigeria is won.

WHAT THIS MEANS:
- The Federal Government is looking to recover assets in other parts of the world, apart from the United State. Malami mentioned Ireland as on e of such countries.
- The government intends to coordinate further meetings in connection with assets recovery in the United Kingdom which are linked with certain personalities.
- Also, the government announced plans to prosecute persons who are linked to money laundering and looting of public funds.
- The Buhari-led government is intensifying efforts to end the menace of corruption which has crippled the country and tainted her image.
- The Nigerian government is working with other foreign bodies to set up procedures that will make it easier to track and recover stolen assets.
Meanwhile, Malami noted that he would not like to reveal the strategy with which the Federal Government will use in making the recovery but those caught will face the wrath of the law.
In May 2021, the Federal Government said that through proactive and collaborative efforts with other countries, it has recovered $700 million looted funds from the US, the UK, Bailiwick of Jersey, Switzerland, and Ireland in the last 4 years.
