As part of a move to spread its services across other parts of the world, United Airlines have announced plans to commence flights between Washington, D.C. and Lagos, Nigeria. 

In an announcement today, September 17, 2021, the airline stated that the move, which is subject to US Government’s approval, will commence by November 29, 2021.

On the heels of the announcement, United’s vice president of international network and alliances, Patrick Quayle, said:

“This new flight to Lagos has been highly anticipated by our customers and offers the first-ever nonstop service between Washington, D.C. and Nigeria, as well as convenient, one-stop connections to over 80 destinations throughout the Americas including Houston and Chicago. 

 “On behalf of all of United, we’d like to offer our sincere thanks to the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority and U.S. Department of Transportation for supporting our plans to provide this service.”

The coming of United Airlines to the Nigerian aviation industry means that:

  • Nigerians now have another international airline they can bank on to travel the world.
  • This also means employment opportunities for Nigerians as the airline will require the services of local workers.
  • This will create an avenue for tourists to further gain access to Nigeria through an airline that they trust to fly them around the globe.
  • The services of United Airline will boost the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Nigeria.
  • The coming of the US-based airline means that the bilateral relationship between Nigeria and the United States will be further strengthened.

Meanwhile, United will operate Washington, D.C. and Lagos with a Boeing 787 Dreamliner featuring 28 United Polaris® business class lie-flat seats, 21 United Premium Plus® premium economy seats, 36 Economy Plus seats and 158 standard economy seats.

The airline added that flight flights will depart Washington, D.C. on Monday, Thursday and Saturday and return from Lagos on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday.

The airline will operate three weekly flights connecting the U.S. capital to Nigeria’s largest city, which is also the top Western African destination for U.S-based travelers.

In the meantime, tickets will be available for sale on united.com and the United app.
